Men's Health Australia

Men's Health Australia is Australia's primary source of information about the psychological and social wellbeing of men and boys. It has been developed in partnership with the Men's Health Information & Resource Centre (MHIRC) at the University of Western Sydney and the Australasian Men's Health Forum (AMHF).

The site provides a number of services:

1. A calendar of upcoming men's health Events

2. Topics and Issues provides articles and links to accurate information on a range of male concerns, as well as starting points for further exploration

3. Media & News provides contact details for expert commentary on a wide variety of issues concerning the health and well-being of men and boys

4. Mythbusters critiques inaccurate and stereotypical reports about men, boys and gender issues, and encourages factual reporting in stories concerning males

5. The home for the Australian branch of the annual International Men’s Health Week celebrations can be found here. Events for the week, and resources for those celebrating the week, can be downloaded or ordered from this site.

6. A wide range of men's health Newsletters

7. Links to other websites providing information on a range of male concerns

Articles, essays, media excerpts, links, references and other materials appearing on this website are included to encourage the widest possible intelligent consideration and debate of issues related to the health and well being of men and boys. They may not at all represent the views or opinions of Men's Health Australia or the collaborating organisations sponsoring this website.

New campaign to help abused men launched on International Men's Day

One in Three Campaign logo pdf New campaign to help abused men launched on International Men's Day

As part of the 2009 International Men’s Day celebrations, a new campaign for male victims of family violence is being launched. The One in Three Campaign is named after the little known fact that up to one in three victims of sexual assault and at least one in three victims of family violence is male (perhaps as many as one in two). The campaign aims to raise public awareness of the existence and needs of male victims of family violence and abuse; to work with government and non-government services alike to provide assistance to male victims; and to reduce the incidence and impacts of family violence on Australian men, women and children.

The One in Three website can be found at oneinthree.com.au.

AMHF submission to the National Men's Health Policy

pdf AMHF submission to the National Men's Health Policy

The AMHF has provided a submission to the National men's Health Policy (download it here). The AMHF is pleased that Australia will have a men's health policy but strongly exhorts the government to create some structure which will be able to draw together the needs of boys and men across Australia, reflecting their diversity and their varying life contexts, whether Aboriginal men struggling against marginalisation, boys in school, men in the home, recently arrived immigrant men, men in the workplace or in retirement. This is what we understand when the DoHA discussion document speaks of the "social determinants of men's health". The importance of such a coordinating mechanism cannot be overemphasised. The lack of any such structure or clear accountability for creating and monitoring successful outcomes in improving men's health, is the most important reason why so many good men's health initiatives have not been sustained in recent years.
