Regional Suicide Prevention Consultations: 10 July to 13 August 2012 (NSW)

The Hon. Mr Kevin Humphries MP, Minister for Mental Health, recently established the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Suicide Prevention as part of the implementation of the NSW Suicide Prevention Strategy 2010-2015.

Using the NSW Strategy as a reference point, the Minister has directed the Committee to undertake a series of community engagement and consultation workshops. The purpose of these workshops is to consult and work with communities to identify how locally based responses could be better supported to prevent acts of self harm and suicide as well as deal with the flow on impacts when these cases occur.

The workshops will concentrate on the current situation in relation to suicide and suicide prevention across NSW, with a particular focus on its unique impact within each region. Participants will be invited to discuss the specific needs required by each locality to reduce the incidence of suicide in their area, as well as how communities then wish to move forward in building awareness and preventing acts of self harm and suicide in the future.

Foundation for Male Studies April 6 conference to focus on deteriorating status of boys & men (USA)

NEW YORK: The Foundation for Male Studies will focus on the research and programs needed to reverse the downward spiral now effecting virtually all aspects of the lives of men and boys, at the Second Annual International Conference on Male Studies – Looking Forward to Solutions, April 6, 2011. Edward M. Stephens, MD, FMS’ Founder and Chair says that in addition to the conference’s solution-geared presentations by leading authorities, the Foundation is calling for papers from academics on how to best deal with increasing levels of male unemployment, depression, suicides, high school and college dropout rates and related problems. Women barred from men's health conference (NZ)

Women are being prevented from taking part in a two-day conference on male suicide rates. The conference, with more than 100 participants from around New Zealand, features male-only guest speakers. Wairarapa suicide prevention coordinator Barry Taylor said women were excluded to encourage men to take responsibility for their own mental health. "Men's mental health has been a hidden subject over many years. Part of the problem is that they don't talk about their feelings and they don't ask for help."
