Victorian Health Department releases first Victorian Men’s health and wellbeing strategy 2010-2014

Joanna Birdseye, A/Director, Policy Co-ordination and Projects, Strategy, Policy and Finance with the Department of Health says “Although Victorian men record health outcomes among the best in the world, research points to a range of areas requiring further attention. Men have lower life expectancy, higher levels of avoidable death, and higher rates of most common causes of death including coronary heart disease, cancers, suicide and injuries.”

Our dads better than yours: Aussies lead world in parenting

Australian fathers have a poor reputation for sharing the housework and childcare. But it's all relative, isn't it? Compared to fathers in Italy or France, Australian dads are domestic paragons, a new study shows. Even compared to fathers in Denmark, where the government supports their involvement in childcare, Australian dads hold their own. "They do less than Australian women but they compare favourably to men in some other countries," says Lyn Craig, a senior research fellow at the Social Policy Research Centre at the University of NSW.

Scotland: domestic violence against men is frequent and often unreported

The results of a major piece of government research on partner abuse in Scotland slipped out relatively unreported before Christmas. The new Scottish findings mirror much Australian and international domestic violence research showing family violence against men is frequent and often goes unreported. The Scottish Crime and Justice Survey 2008-09: Partner Abuse was published by Scotland's Chief Statistician on December 15th 2009. The research was conducted with 16,000 interviewees and represents the most comprehensive investigation to date into the extent of partner abuse in Scotland.
