Elderly men in hostels have to beg staff for more to eat
ELDERLY men living in aged-care hostels are being forced to beg staff for extra food because they are not served enough at meal times. Others are regularly given party pies or cocktail frankfurts as a main meal because there is not enough money to provide full meals, a study has found. More than 50,000 Australians who are mobile and can care for themselves live in low-level aged care, costing the Federal Government about $15,000 a year each. But researchers at Monash University found meal sizes at the 14 hostels studied too small for most men, none included enough vegetables, 65 per cent of residents showed signs of under-nutrition and a third were not being fed enough protein, which is vital for muscle and brain cell maintenance.

How half a million lonely old men are paying the price of the divorce boom (UK)
Half a million elderly men lead lonely lives with no friends and no contact from their families, a report warned yesterday. It found that one person in five with an elderly father is no longer in touch with him. One in four claims to be too busy to maintain contact. Divorce and family break-up has left millions of men without ties to their children and with few or no family links, said the charity Help the Aged. Retirement deprives many of the company of work colleagues and others are left alone by bereavement or their own poor health. Of the million elderly men who live alone, half have no human contact and many feel trapped inside their homes.

Loving life: older men keeping active in the community
While some men face retirement and old age with trepidation, Jack Zinn, a retiree from the inner City has less time now than when he worked full time and he couldn't be happier. "Before I stopped work I was anxious about not keeping my mind active," said Mr Zinn. "Since retiring I have become involved in researching older men's issues and have published my first book, 'Older Men's Business'. "These activities encourage me to learn new things and I've met so many new people." |
